ALTITUDE SICKNESS AND COPING UP
Altitude sickness starts from the area above 2000m to 3000m where the air(oxygen) is thinner than the plain lands. As you move higher and higher you experience dizziness, sickness and heavy breathing. In Mountaineering the syndrome of Acute Mountain sickness occurs from the thin air which makes the respiration difficult. It is always recommended to carry oxygen cylinders, breathing bags and use them to the person facing it. Now, note that if it is no longer possible to climb higher; the only best way is to descend.
The precaution that you can take before pre climb is always consult the medical Practitioners for health checkup. Preferably full medical checkup, about six months earlier, before taking the challenging journey to the high land area in Nepal. For pregnant women it is absolutely not to participate the trek. Common symptoms of altitude sickness in people are shortness of breath, inability to walk, confusion, fluid buildup in lungs and brain. Doctors may examine the symptoms with chest X-RAY to see if any fluid is in the chest. Order brain MRI or CT scan to check fluid in the brain. During the trek the problem could be minimized by additional oxygen, medicines, lung inhaler, respirator. However there is a full stop just don’t climb further and come down to lower elevations.
ACCOMODATIONS:
Bergreisen Nepal welcomes you to Nepal heartily. We ensure your safety and comfort all the time during the tour. We have twin sharing comfortable 3 star deluxe hotel rooms in Kathmandu, Chitwan and Pokhara. Throughout the trek you can stay at cozy lodges, guesthouses and all weather viable tented camp. Food:
Food prepared during the journey is to make sure that you are well fed and don’t travel hungrily or thirsty. We provide you with the fresh hygienic food prepared from the cooks and mineral water to keep you healthy and hydrated. For everyday food your budget allocation of at least USD 25 will help you get cheap and hygienic foods from fresh produce throughout the journey at different locations. You can also make a small arrangement from your side by carrying snack bars, granola bars, and bakeries but make sure that you dispose of them sensibly and not gather them near toilets. Litters and garbage makes the destinations polluted and we don’t want that to happen.
EQUIPMENT
We always believe that the more equipped you are, the smoother is the trek in Nepal. We suggest you to have trekking clothes such as jackets, woolen shirts and thick sweaters, track suit, track shoes, trousers, thermal wear, gloves, sandals, woolen hats, long sleeve shirt, undergarments, towel and handkerchief with you. Trekking gears and trekking equipment are must haves. You will need snow glasses and sunglasses, trekking sticks, duffel bags, backpack, water bottles and water purifying tablets, toiletries, umbrella, head lamp, torch, camera, trekking map, compass, pen notebook, lip guard, footwear, windstopper, walking sticks and tissues with you.
CLOTHES
If you have made up your mind to come for trekking and mountaineering in the Himalayas of Nepal, make sure that you carry your own personal clothing that helps you during various climatic conditions and are comfortable while travelling. We recommend you to have a pair of light hiking boots because your feet will constantly be in motion so instead of tight leather boots make sure that your shoes are of the right size and very comfortable to make the trek endurable at different altitudes of Nepal.
You can also carry light running shoes and sandals while sightseeing at Kathmandu. You also have to carry a few pairs of socks that fit in your zip lock bags and are portable to carry from one place to another. In the outerwear have jackets of fleece with enough pockets and are light and easy to wash and wear. You can carry waterproof pants, t-shirts’, fleece vests also with you. Your packing is incomplete if you don’t have comfortable cotton underwear, one that is not made from silk that is not sweat resistant, also not providing insulation in cold weather. Your travel backpack should be light and portable. Don’t cramp with too much stuff but choose the right clothing you use when going for hiking or trekking.
Training & Experiences:
In Nepal, one needs to have a proper training regime to take the challenging trekking and mountaineering experiences. Your physical fitness, endurance and stamina is what that takes the most while others are the arrangements to make you relive. The magical moments while you take these challenging adventures. Most parts of the trek are strenuous and require four to five hours walk. We suggest you to take training for trekking at various altitudes before you actually begin. Some tips are practice warm up and stretches, consume a balanced diet and stay hydrated. Check with your doctor and follow his advice and medications strongly.
Note about the trekking destination and duration at various points. Make sure that you have the mental preparation before you choose to be a part of the trekking journey. You must be hydrated and insulated because the climate of places in Nepal varies at different elevations. You can start by brisk walking daily, jogging, skipping, squats, stretches, climbing up and down the staircases in a considerable way that helps you get going. For Mountain climbing the factors you need to note down are timing for pre training and involved with outside activities, do cardio workouts, diet, and assessing your goals of training.
Engage in mountain biking, climbing and skiing, swimming road running, trail running activities. You can work out at the pull up bar at the gym, curls, lunges and grip machines. You can work with rope pull and leverage exercises to make you both flexible and sturdy while using the climbing ropes and crampons to climb the peak.
