Annapurna Trekking Route Update: Annapurna Circuit Closed, ABC Trek Open
Latest Update from Berg Reisen Nepal Pvt. Ltd.
Nepal is home to some of the world's most spectacular trekking destinations, and the Annapurna region remains one of the most beloved Himalayan trekking areas for travelers from around the globe. With its breathtaking mountain scenery, traditional villages, diverse landscapes, and rich Himalayan culture, the Annapurna region offers unforgettable experiences for both experienced trekkers and first-time visitors to Nepal.
Among the most popular trekking adventures in this region are the Annapurna Circuit Trek (ACT) and the Annapurna Base Camp Trek (ABC).
At present, however, trekkers should be aware that the conditions on these two routes are different.
The Annapurna Circuit Trek is currently closed in the affected sections, particularly around the Manang–Thorong Phedi–Thorong La area, due to recent heavy rainfall, landslides, road damage, and significant snowfall at higher elevations. Several sections of the road between Besisahar and Manang have also been affected by landslides and flood-related damage, making transportation and trekking access difficult.
On the other hand, the Annapurna Base Camp Trek is currently open for trekking and remains an attractive option for travelers wishing to experience the spectacular Annapurna Himalayas.
At Berg Reisen Nepal Pvt. Ltd., the safety of our guests is always our highest priority. We closely monitor trekking conditions and communicate the latest practical information to our clients before and during their journey.
Current Annapurna Trekking Conditions
The recent weather conditions have created significant challenges in several parts of the Annapurna region.
Heavy rainfall has caused landslides, flooding, and road damage in lower and upper Manang. The mountain roads connecting Besisahar with Manang have been affected at several points, with landslides and debris making transportation difficult.
As the road follows steep mountain terrain alongside the Marsyangdi River, heavy rainfall can quickly increase the risk of landslides, rockfalls, and river erosion.
Further north, conditions become even more challenging.
The higher areas around Manang, Thorong Phedi and Thorong La have experienced significant snowfall. Because Thorong La is situated at an elevation of approximately 5,416 meters, changing weather conditions can make the crossing difficult and potentially dangerous.
For this reason, the affected sections of the Annapurna Circuit Trek remain closed at present.
We strongly recommend that trekkers do not attempt to enter closed areas or find alternative routes around official restrictions.
Annapurna Circuit Trek: Currently Closed
The Annapurna Circuit Trek is one of Nepal's classic long-distance Himalayan adventures.
Traditionally, the journey begins around Besisahar and follows the Marsyangdi Valley toward Dharapani, Chame, Pisang, and Manang. From Manang, trekkers gradually gain altitude toward Yak Kharka, Thorong Phedi, and eventually Thorong La Pass.
After crossing the pass, the trail descends toward Muktinath and continues through the dramatic landscapes of Mustang and the Kali Gandaki Valley.
The route offers an extraordinary variety of landscapes and cultures, from subtropical valleys and terraced farmland to high-altitude Himalayan terrain.
Unfortunately, current conditions have temporarily interrupted this journey.
Landslides on the Besisahar–Manang Road
One of the major concerns at present is the condition of the Besisahar–Manang road.
Several sections of the road have been damaged by landslides, heavy rainfall, flooding, and river erosion. In some places, large quantities of mud, rocks, and debris have blocked the road, while other areas have experienced damage to bridges and road surfaces.
This road is an important access route for trekkers traveling toward Manang.
Even when individual trekking sections may appear accessible, damaged road infrastructure can make it difficult to reach the starting points of different stages of the trek.
Our team is continuously monitoring the situation and will resume full Annapurna Circuit trekking arrangements once the route is accessible and conditions are considered suitable for travel.
Thorong Phedi and Thorong La
Thorong Phedi is one of the final major stops before crossing the famous Thorong La Pass.
The area is already challenging under normal conditions because of its high altitude. During periods of heavy snowfall, strong winds, and poor visibility, the difficulty increases significantly.
Recent snowfall around the Thorong La region has made the crossing unsuitable at present.
For trekkers who have planned to cross Thorong La, patience is important.
The Annapurna Circuit is not permanently closed. The current closure is related to adverse weather and trail and road conditions. Once the route is cleared and the relevant authorities and local teams determine that travel can safely resume, the trek will once again be available.
At Berg Reisen Nepal, we will always prioritize the safety of our guests over completing an itinerary under unsuitable conditions.
Annapurna Base Camp Trek Is Currently Open
The good news for travelers planning to trek in the Annapurna region is that the Annapurna Base Camp Trek is currently open.
Unlike the Annapurna Circuit, the ABC Trek does not require travelers to cross Thorong La or travel through the currently affected high-altitude Manang section.
The Annapurna Base Camp route takes trekkers deep into the spectacular Annapurna Sanctuary, surrounded by some of the most impressive Himalayan peaks in Nepal.
The journey provides incredible views of:
-
Annapurna I – 8,091 meters
-
Annapurna South
-
Annapurna III
-
Annapurna Fang
-
Hiunchuli
-
Machhapuchhre (Fishtail)
-
Gangapurna
The combination of mountains, forests, rivers, waterfalls, and traditional villages makes the ABC Trek one of Nepal's most rewarding trekking experiences.
Why Annapurna Base Camp Is a Great Alternative
For travelers who have been planning the Annapurna Circuit but cannot wait for the route to reopen, the Annapurna Base Camp Trek can be an excellent alternative.
The ABC Trek offers a completely different experience from the Annapurna Circuit while still providing an unforgettable journey into the heart of the Annapurna Himalayas.
The trail passes through beautiful villages, dense rhododendron forests, and dramatic mountain landscapes before reaching Annapurna Base Camp.
One of the most memorable moments of the trek is arriving at the Annapurna Sanctuary and seeing the massive Himalayan peaks rising directly around you.
The feeling of standing beneath Annapurna I, Annapurna South, and Machhapuchhre is something that photographs cannot fully capture.
Annapurna Base Camp Trek Route
The exact itinerary can be customized according to the traveler's available time, fitness level, and preferred starting point.
A typical ABC Trek may include destinations such as:
Pokhara → Ghandruk → Chhomrong → Himalaya → Machhapuchhre Base Camp → Annapurna Base Camp → Bamboo → Jhinu Danda → Pokhara
Depending on road conditions and the chosen itinerary, the trek can be completed in approximately 7 to 12 days.
Some trekkers prefer a longer itinerary with additional acclimatization and exploration days, while experienced hikers may choose a shorter program.
At Berg Reisen Nepal, we design our trekking itineraries according to the needs of each traveler rather than simply following a fixed schedule.
What Makes the ABC Trek Special?
The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is not only about reaching a high-altitude destination.
It is a journey through changing landscapes and local communities.
At lower elevations, trekkers encounter green hills, terraced fields, rivers, and traditional villages. As the trail climbs higher, the vegetation gradually changes, and the landscape becomes more alpine.
The rhododendron forests are particularly beautiful during spring when the hills are covered with colorful flowers.
Along the route, trekkers can experience the warm hospitality of local communities and learn about the traditional lifestyles of people living in the Annapurna region.
By the time you reach Machhapuchhre Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp, the landscape has transformed completely.
Towering Himalayan peaks surround the sanctuary, creating one of the most spectacular natural amphitheaters in Nepal.
Is Annapurna Safe for Trekking Right Now?
This is an important question for anyone planning a Himalayan adventure.
The answer depends on the particular trekking route.
The Annapurna Circuit Trek is currently affected by closures and road disruptions, especially around the Manang and Thorong La sections.
The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is currently open, but trekkers should understand that Himalayan conditions can change quickly.
Heavy rain can cause temporary roadblocks, landslides, or changes to trail conditions. Therefore, we always recommend checking the latest conditions before starting your trek.
At Berg Reisen Nepal, we do not simply send our clients onto the trail based on a fixed itinerary.
Our guides communicate with our office and local contacts throughout the journey. If weather or trail conditions require a change, we can adjust the itinerary accordingly.
For us, a successful trek means returning home safely with wonderful memories of Nepal.
Why Choose Berg Reisen Nepal?
Choosing the right trekking company is an important part of planning a Himalayan adventure.
At Berg Reisen Nepal Pvt. Ltd., we are a locally operated trekking and travel company with a team that understands Nepal's mountains, trekking routes, and local communities.
Our goal is to provide safe, responsible, and memorable experiences for travelers visiting Nepal.
We believe that trekking should be more than simply following a route from one village to another.
It should be an opportunity to experience the mountains, meet local people, discover Nepalese culture, and create memories that remain long after returning home.
Safety Comes First
Mountain travel requires flexibility.
Weather can change unexpectedly, roads can become blocked, and trail conditions can vary from one day to another.
Our guides and local team continuously monitor conditions during the trek and make practical decisions when necessary.
If a route becomes unsuitable, we discuss alternatives with our guests instead of taking unnecessary risks.
Experienced Local Guides
Our trekking guides understand the terrain, local culture, and challenges associated with Himalayan trekking.
They assist trekkers with navigation, accommodation, meals, altitude management, and communication throughout the journey.
Having an experienced local guide is particularly valuable when conditions change unexpectedly.
Flexible Trekking Programs
Every traveler is different.
Some guests want a comfortable and relaxed trekking experience, while others prefer longer walking days and more challenging itineraries.
We can customize trekking programs according to your available time, interests, experience, and fitness level.
What Should Annapurna Circuit Trekkers Do Now?
If you have already booked an Annapurna Circuit Trek, there is no need to cancel your dream of completing the circuit.
The current closure is related to weather and route conditions.
We recommend waiting until the affected sections are reopened and transportation and trekking conditions have improved.
If your travel dates are flexible, we can help you reschedule the trek for a more suitable period.
If you are already in Nepal and want to trek during the current period, we can also discuss alternative routes such as Annapurna Base Camp, Ghorepani Poon Hill, or Mardi Himal, depending on the latest local conditions.
Our team will help you choose an itinerary based on what is currently practical rather than forcing a particular route.
