Phoksundo Lake is an oligotrophic mountain freshwater lake in Nepal’s Shey Phoksundo National Park, at an elevation of 3,611.5 meters in the Dolpo District. Phoksundo Lake is 494 acres (1.91 sq. mi) in size, with a water capacity of 409,000,000 m3 and a discharge of 3.715 m3/s. In 2004, the Office of Hydrology and Meteorology conducted a survey that determined the lake’s greatest depth to be 145 feet. The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology conducted another comprehensive study in 2019, measuring the lake’s greatest depth at 136.20 meters.
Phoksundo Lake was designated a Ramsar site in September 2007. In the southern belt, there are more than 20 stupas and one gompa on the eastern side of the lake, where annual prayers and worship are held. Upper Dolpo is dominated by traditional Tibetan culture, while lower Dolpo, including Ringmo settlement, is dominated by Buddhism and Bon.
